Governor Gear FAQs

Governor Gear is the upgrade system unlocked at Town Center level 22 that boosts attack and defense for all of your marches simultaneously. Questions about Governor Gear usually relate to the various materials, investment bottlenecks, set bonuses, and how the return on investment of Governor Gear changes over time.

What does Governor Gear actually do, and how is it different from hero gear?

Governor Gear boosts two stats, attack and defense, and applies those bonuses globally to every march you send out at the same time. Hero Gear, by contrast, is tied to the specific hero leading that march. This means one fully-developed governor gear setup can benefit your main march, the combat stats of your gathering marches, and any additional marches or rallies you lead all simultaneously, making it one of the highest-leverage investments in the game.

This does get offset a bit by diminishing returns on the cost-benefit ratio of higher-level Governor Gear pieces, which we outline for transparency in our reference chart data for Governor Gear. Still, even after significant progression in gameplay, Governor Gear as a whole will still likely be responsible for 15% (or more) of your main march stats.

When does governor gear unlock and what materials do I need?

Governor Gear unlocks when your Town Center reaches level 22. After the early easy levels, the primary bottleneck material for most players quickly becomes Artisan's Visions. These are rarer than the other crafting ingredients and will likely determine your upgrade pace more than anything else while you build up an abundance of Satin and Gilded Threads. Because the other materials tend to “catch up” over time, you should focus on continuing to acquire Artisan’s visions every chance you can, even if you are in the earliest days of the game and your current bottleneck is Satin or Gilded Threads. These will eventually balance out due to the drop in Satina and Gilded Thread cost that comes in after a few levels.

Should I upgrade Governor Gear outside of events, or wait?

Always wait for events when possible. Hall of Governors (HoG) awards points for governor gear upgrades, and those points can translate into significant rewards. One thing that catches players off guard: the event point system is not linear. Upgrading a piece of blue (uncommon) Governor Gear can score more points per material spent than upgrading purple gear in some situations. Don't assume higher rarity always means better event returns, check the points breakdown before spending your Artisan's Visions. Our Governor Gear optimizer tool can help with this.

Does Governor Gear have set bonuses?

Yes. Governor Gear does have set bonuses, which activate at 3 pieces and 6 pieces from the same set. These are simply global stat boosts to all troops defense (3-piece) or attack (6-piece) and do not have any special abilities like gear set bonuses from other games you may have played. This is worth keeping in mind when you're choosing which pieces to prioritize, because completing a set threshold gives a meaningful bonus on top of the individual piece stats. That said, the magnitude of the set bonuses are somewhat low given the amount of effort it takes to complete them. In any case, our Governor Gear optimizer tool accounts for these set bonuses (and allocates them across each respective troop stat weight) in its recommendations to you.

What stats does Governor Gear give, and how do they stack with my other bonuses?

Governor Gear gives attack and defense bonuses for both individual troop types (Governor Gear stats) and all troops (set bonuses). These stack additively with the same stats coming from research, pets, island buildings, and Alliance outpost bonuses. There's no multiplicative interaction, it's all one big additive pool of troop stats.
